Spring/ Summer 2020 Sunglasses Trends: Latest 2020 Sunglasses Trends

Eyewear junkies, gather around because the spring/ summer 2020 sunglasses trends are here! As the days get longer and the sun gets stronger, good eye protection is a must, and the spring 2020 sunglasses definitely deliver on that.

Spring/ Summer 2020 Sunglasses Trends

The eyewear options this season skewed large, with a wide enough range of designs that anyone will find something to like. There were lots of oddball creations in a variety of sizes, making many of the spring 2020 eyewear trends extremely creative.

The summer 2020 eyewear trends did feature some holdovers from previous seasons, not to mention the various timeless and vintage options, which will never go out of style. Have a look, and decide which of the spring/ summer 2020 sunglasses are your favorites!

#1. Oversized Round Sunglasses

For those with sharp faces, the winning design for oversized spring 2020 eyewear trends was round sunglasses, which soften the face while offering protection.

One of our favorite variations on oversized rounded sunglasses was at Max Mara, where wire-frame glasses had a semi-aviator design with a top bar but no bridge. Rounded sunglasses at Nina Ricci also had a unique design, with a rivet-like detail over the bridge lending them a historical touch.

There were plenty more oversized sunglasses going round, including at Alberta Ferretti, Kate Spade New York, and Dolce & Gabbana.

#2. Aviators

You can’t go wrong with a pair of aviator sunglasses for your summer 2020 sunglasses. This unisex design is totally timeless and conveys a sense of adventure that is hard to resist.

We’ve been getting classy aviators from Celine for a few seasons now, and this one was no different with some lovely metal-framed, oversized aviators. Aviators took on a more rounded and feminine shape at Tory Burch, with teardrop-shaped lenses and embellished silver legs.

Even Self-Portrait released some uniquely shaped options inspired by the aviator design. We also saw variations on aviator sunglasses at Rag & Bone and Michael Kors.

#3. Large Square Sunglasses

There is something particularly glamorous about oversized square sunglasses – this is not a shape that necessarily works with all features, but when it does, the effect is attention-grabbing. We think oversized square sunglasses are actually one of the major breakout spring/ summer 2020 eyewear trends, so expect to see all the influencers wearing squares.

Elie Saab presented oversized square sunglasses with delicate metal frames and colorful lenses in shades like blue or green. Sunglasses took up a bit more space at Etro, with thick enamel or plastic around the lenses but with a contrasting metal bridge and legs.

Finally, the most dramatic square sunglasses were at Courreges, with a slightly off-kilter square shape and extra thick plastic frames in a wide range of colors.

#4. Elongated and Slim

Very tiny sunglasses were mostly on the way out for the spring/ summer 2020 eyewear trends, but slightly slim or elongated frames were still perfectly acceptable.

At Proenza Schouler, thick, black frames had a pointed shape that stretched out past the parameter of the face, but with just slim oval lenses for contrast. At Peter Pilotto, matte frames had a semi-square, elongated shape but with slightly larger lenses, which made them more wearable while still unusual.

We saw more slim sunglasses designs at AWAKE Mode, Vivetta, Valentino, and Burberry.

#5. Stretched Oval Glasses

Slim, vintage spring 2020 sunglasses trends continue with oval-shaped lenses that look like they’re straight out of the ‘90s.

It was all about the slim glasses at Rokh, with both oval and triangle options. The oval sunglasses had a purple tint, which added a bit of retro charm to them.

We also spotted a pair of stretched-out oval aviators at Self-Portrait, while at Matty Bovan stretched oval sunglasses felt like they had a light brown plastic frame and reflective blue lenses.

#6. Top Rim Focus

The spring/ summer 2020 sunglasses trends foresee a lot of focus on the upper part of the glasses, with dominant top rims.

The breakout design at Lanvin consisted of a headband-like hoop fitted above the lenses that, in one piece, acted as both the legs, top rim, and upper bridge. The design at Helmut Lang, with a prominent upper bridge connected to the top rim, was comparably less outrageous but still unusual. We also saw some top rim focus at Off-White and Loewe.

#7. Unique Oversized Shapes

If you’re bored with all the square and round oversized sunglasses options, consider some of the extra funky summer 2020 sunglasses!

Christian Dior presented pentagonal glasses, with a very square shape near the outside but with an extra point right by the bridge. The glasses had thick, plastic frames in a few color options. It was all about oversized pentagons at Ralph Russo as well, but with a slightly more rounded shape in the center.

If you’d rather have more sides and angle, in addition to oversized round glasses, Gucci also presented heptagonal sunglasses with thick black frames and either yellow or black lenses depending on your tastes.

#8. Geometric Eyewear Shapes

While uniquely shaped glasses mostly came in extra-large sizes, there were also some creations that didn’t have to take up a lot of space to make an impact.

All of the summer 2020 sunglasses at Self-Portrait had an avant-garde feel, but while most were square, a pair of hexagonal sunglasses with a top bridge definitely broke the mold.

Off-White presented a lot of conceptual eyewear this season, but the most unique of all was a pair of sunglasses that relied on negative space to create an effect as though they had round holes in them.

#9. Angled Triangle Glasses

Another one of the more unique spring 2020 eyewear trends is the angled triangle sunglasses, which, depending on how they are angled, can actually slightly change the shape of the face.

Wire-rimmed sunglasses at Anteprima were slightly angled inwards, which gave them a cat-eye effect that helped to elongate and flatter the features. At Christian Siriano, it was the opposite effect, with triangle sunglasses angled downwards on the outer end, which was unique if not necessarily flattering.

#10. Slim and Elongated Triangle Lenses

If you still have last season’s slim triangle sunglasses on hand, you will surely be thrilled to know they are still cool for the spring 2020 sunglasses trends.

Wire-frame triangle glasses at Rokh had very dark lenses and were worn low on the face, which gave them a ‘70s-meets-‘90s retro vibe. The styling was surprisingly similar at AWAKE Mode, with both wire-frames and black plastic frames with stretch triangles sported low on the bridge of the nose.

#11. Triangle Lenses

In addition to all the unique variations on triangle sunglasses, the original design was also one of the key spring 2020 sunglasses trends.

Those with oval faces will love the flattering eccentricity of Blumarine triangle sunglasses, with a slightly oversized design and mod-inspired white frames. The triangular cat-eye glasses at Miu Miu were all charm, with a black frame with gold metal connecting pieces, clear lenses proving that sight-correcting eyewear can be just as chic as sunglasses.

#12. Lenses Extended Past the Frame

This unique trend started in autumn, but it continued into the spring 2020 sunglasses with lenses applied either directly on top of the frames or lenses that were a little bigger than the frames, so they extended past them.

It was the latter situation at Dolce & Gabbana, with large square lenses fit behind round glasses frames, which made for a cool geometric look.

At Chloé, the lenses fitted over the thick plastic frames were shaped to slightly extend on the end, which gave them a butterfly shape. Because of the thickness of the frame below the lens, the construction wasn’t actually apparent at first glance.

#13. Blinged-Out Sunglasses

The spring 2020 eyewear trends predict a touch of bling – not as much as in previous years, so if you’re a fan of a lot of shine, you might want to dig up your old sunnies. Still, there was something in there for those who need all their accessories stoned to the gods.

Glasses matched other spring 2020 accessories at Area, which had a show where anything that could be covered in crystals was, including the models’ faces. The thin, metal rims and legs were covered in rows of delicate crystals.

Large, wayfarer-style sunglasses matched other accessories at Moschino, which means that the frames were made of a textured gold material embedded with colorful gems. Lastly, blinged-out eyewear at I Love Pretty was purely decorative, with yellow, rimless lenses made totally opaque thanks to a heavy coating of tiny jewels.

#14. Surround Protection

Surround glasses can give a touch of extra protection, but more importantly, they have a design that conveys quirkiness and lends itself well to both futuristic and retro effects.

The added lens along the side for aviator-style sunglasses at Michael Kors only contributed to the retro feel of the design, while at Helmut Lang, it felt futuristic as an addition to rectangular, rimless glasses with a neon green lens extension.

#15. Rectangular Single-Lens Glasses

The ‘90s X-Men cartoon is probably my favorite style reference, and these spring 2020 sunglasses are definitely giving me Cyclops vibes. If you refuse to blend into the crowd and would like a pair of sunglasses that will really stand out, well, a pair of these would be an easy choice.

The extra rectangular shape of these sunglasses at Balmain featured a rimless design with vivid blue lenses. The design at Annakiki looked remarkably similar, so even though technically there were two lenses separated by a frame, the glasses looked as though they were comprised of one rectangular piece.

We saw more rectangular single-lens sunglasses for 2020 at Dolce & Gabbana and Rick Owens.

#16. Sporty Sunglasses

If streetwear and urban are the words that best describe your personal style, we think you will love the sporty spring 2020 sunglasses that came out – all sharp angles, fun colors, and mirrored elements.

The most coveted sporty sunglasses this season will surely be Versace’s, which were totally face-shielding with a semi-rimless, colorful design, wide legs, and the Versace brand name right over the bridge. Mirrored sunglasses at Bottega Veneta also felt distinctly sporty, with mirrored lenses and a metallic triangular upper rim.

Lastly, at Loewe, sporty eyewear designs were like a more subdued version of what Versace will release, with metallic upper rims in gold or silver and with either clear or dark brown lenses, but without any extra embellishments.

#17. Fanciful Eyewear

We couldn’t think of a better way to describe the more whimsical summer 2020 sunglasses than as “fanciful” with unusual yet adorable details and designs that bring out our inner child.

One of the repeating shapes on the Anna Sui runway was somewhere between a cloud and a wing. It was the shape for both summer 2020 eye makeup and for sunglasses frames with colorful lenses.

It’s one thing to have a butterfly frame design, but at Marc Jacobs, the sunglasses were shaped like literal butterflies, with lenses in playful shades like pink and blue. There was even a touch of playfulness at Giorgio Armani, with the legs of oversized sunglasses shaped to look like flowers.

#18. Tortoiseshell Sunglasses

Tortoiseshell frames lend an academic air to their wearer, and while they are quite timeless, their warm color works especially well with the ‘70s color palette that ruled the runways this season. This is why the tortoiseshell sunglasses for spring 2020 are a great choice if you want to marry trendy items with classy staples in your look.

There were a ton of different tortoiseshell eyewear designs at Fendi – almost all were oversized, but with enough shapes and lens-shades that anyone could find something to like.

There were a few different speckled designs at Ports 1961, including a very warm and orange-heavy take on the classic tortoiseshell. For those who normally prefer eye-obscuring sunglasses, Stella McCartney presented a dark-lensed pair with a darker-than-normal take on tortoiseshell.

#19. Pink Lenses

There was no lack of cuteness in the spring/ summer 2020 sunglasses trends, and we think pink lenses helped with that. In a dark world, we can certainly understand why designers wanted their customers to see the world through rose-colored glasses.

The semi-rimless cat-eye glasses at Off-White had opalescent pink lenses and a unique top rim, which lent them an ‘80s retro-futuristic vibe. Pink lenses were a natural match to the adorable cloud eyewear design at Anna Sui.

One of the lighter pair of sunglasses at Stella McCartney had pink lenses to match a transparently pink acetate frame.

#20. Yellow Lenses

Yellow-lens sunglasses are one of the hottest summer 2020 eyewear trends, with a massive number of brands presenting the warm tint.

Many lens colors were on display at Fendi, but vivid yellow oversized lenses with a tortoiseshell stood out thanks to their intense warmth. Many oversized glasses at Gucci also had yellow lenses, which contrasted strongly against black frames.

At Ralph Russo and Rick Owens, we saw yellow-lens sunglasses paired with white frames, which made for a softer contrast.

#21. Green Lenses

Seems like the spring 2020 eyewear trends want you to see green, and with everything on fire, maybe we need lenses to help.

At Givenchy, a pair of wide glasses with a semi-teardrop shape had olive green lenses and frames, but the lenses were still somewhat transparent, making it easy to see the eyes.

For a more mainstream take, Tory Burch also released forest green glasses with a wider design, but the shape, though not totally traditional, was a smaller size making for a great pair of summer 2020 sunglasses for any occasion.

We also saw green lenses on glasses at Versace, Valentino, and Elie Saab.

#22. Gradient Lenses

Gradient lenses were super careful for the spring 2020 eyewear trends, and offered the best of both worlds – because of the gradual lightening from top to bottom, they protect the eyes while still allowing you to see through the bottom, even when it’s suddenly dark.

Kate Spade New York presented airy, semi-transparent acetate sunglasses for 2020 with an earth tone gradient of dark brown to light amber, which will work well with any boho-chic wardrobe.

If you’d rather keep it cool, we saw blue gradient lenses fitted into oversized, aviator-inspired frames at Bibhu Mohapatra. There were plenty more gradient lenses floating around the fashion week, including at Missoni, Chloé, Max Mara, and Versace.

#23. Black on Black

We love the intensity of black frames and black lenses, so we’re happy that they’re back according to the summer 2020 sunglasses trends. This season moved away from the matrix aesthetic of autumn, but not entirely with some excellent eyewear options for those with a darker style.

At Zimmermann, oversized black sunglasses had a bit of a sporty touch, with a semi-triangular design and a wide bridge. Black on black sunglasses at Saint Laurent had an oval shape that was flattering in a classy and modern kind of way.

We also saw black on black sunglasses at Rochas, AWAKE Mode, and Coach 1941.

#24. White Frames

White sunglasses gained iconic status as Kurt Cobain’s favorite frames and have since been prized by dozens of other celebrities. This is why they keep showing up on the runways every year.

The white frames at Courreges really stood out since both the glasses, and the legs were oversized, with blue lenses contrasting against the white of the frames.

Glasses at Cynthia Rowley had half-white and half-transparent matte frames in a classy wayfarer shape. There were plenty more takes on white frames at Rick Owens, Ralph Russo, and Dior.

#25. Transparent Frames with Clear Lenses

Translucent frames had a big showing in the spring 2020 eyewear trends, and while you’d expect a see-through design to be understated, they actually stand out quite well.

Hugo Boss and Burberry both presented blue on blue transparent sunglasses for 2020, the former with a square shape and solid design, while the latter with a more elongated, oval design. Stella McCartney presented a few different oversized eyewear options with matching transparent lenses and frames in shades like blue, green, and pink.
